The vulva is not dirty. The vagina is a self-cleaning organ. And yet, an entire industry has been built on convincing you otherwise. The most common cause of vulvar irritation walking into my clinic is not infection — it is soap.

The barrier, briefly

The vulvar skin barrier is thinner, more permeable, and more responsive to friction and pH shifts than the skin on your arm. That is not a flaw. It is a feature.

If your vulva could talk, it would ask you to leave it alone.

A shortlist that actually helps

  • Warm water. That is the wash.
  • Cotton, breathable fabrics — especially overnight.
  • Fragrance-free everything, from detergent to lube.
  • Change out of wet clothes within an hour when possible.
